Permissions

We want you to enjoy your home and make it your own. Some things like keeping a pet or making improvements, may need our permission first. This helps keep your home safe, well maintained and in line with your tenancy agreement.

We want you to enjoy your home and make it your own.
Some things you may want to do like keeping a pet, making home improvements, or installing new equipment might need our permission first.

Decorating your home

In most cases, we’re happy for you to paint, decorate or do small DIY jobs around your home.

Always check with us first before making any changes to your home.

What you can do will depend on your tenancy agreement. If you’re unsure what to do or need help with the process, please contact us, we’re here to help.

If you want to make changes that involve electrics or plumbing (for example, fitting an electric shower), you must:

  • Get permission from us first
  • Use a certified contractor
  • Make sure you have the right planning permission, if needed (your local authority can advise on this)

How do I ask for permission?

  • If you’d like to make improvements to your home, you can let us know by phone 0300 003 7007 and select option 2
  • by email enquiries@glh.org.uk

We’ll need you tell us what you want to do to help us make the right decision.

Please don’t start any work until we’ve given you written permission.

Keeping a pet

We know that pets can bring joy, comfort and companionship but having a pet is a big responsibility. You’ll need to think carefully about whether your home and lifestyle are suitable for the type of pet you want.

Pets must always be safe, well cared for and not cause problems for your neighbours or the people you live with or who support you, or damage your home.

Can I keep a pet?

You must get permission from us before bringing any pet into your home.

When making our decision we’ll look at things like:

  • The type of home you live in (house, flat, shared home).
  • The size of your home and any garden.
  • The type and number of pets you’d like to have.
  • Whether the pet is for therapy or assistance.

If your pet is a therapy animal, we’ll ask you to send us supporting documents. If you have a registered assistance animal (for example a guide dog), you don’t need permission but please let us know so we can update our records.

If you’re unsure whether you can have a pet or what kind of animal is suitable for your home, please contact us before making any decisions.
