Gas safety

If you have gas appliances in your home, we’ll send a gas engineer to carry out a safety check once a year.

This is to help keep you, your neighbours, and your home safe.

During the check, the engineer will make sure everything is working properly and look for any problems that could cause a gas leak, fire, or a build-up of carbon monoxide.

It’s a quick visit that helps us keep your home safe and gives you peace of mind.

Access to your home

We need access to your home to complete this annual check.

The gas safety check is part of your tenancy agreement, and if we can’t gain access, in some cases, we may have to take legal action to make sure the check is carried out – but we’ll always try to contact you and work with you first.

If you smell gas or think there’s a leak

If you ever smell gas, act quickly and stay safe:

  1. Turn off the gas supply at the meter straight away.
  2. Open windows and doors to let fresh air in.
  3. Put out all naked flames.
  4. Do not switch on or off any electrical appliances, including lights.
  5. Do not use your mobile phone in the area.
  6. Do not use matches or lighters.

Call the Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999, then contact Golden Lane Housing.

Keep the gas supply isolated until the leak has been fixed.

If an appliance fails the safety check

If one of your gas appliances fails the safety check, our engineer will make it safe before leaving your home.

We’ll then contact you to explain what needs to happen next and agree a time with you to carry out any further work.

You’ll receive a Gas Safety Record, which includes:

Using gas safely

If you employ anyone to carry out gas work in your home, they must be a Gas Safe registered engineer.
