June’s story

“It’s been the best 20 years of my life, it’s just heaven,” says June. “I remember coming to view my flat and the day I moved in – it was on 31 July 1998 and it was hot that day.

I’d never lived on my own before. I was working at Cadlington House, a Mencap home for people with a learning disability when we were told it was going to close. I lived in Pinetree Cottage with two other people on the same site. It was the manager who helped me find somewhere. We went to the council first of all but they couldn’t help. Then my manager found out that Golden Lane Housing had been set up by Mencap – they came to see me and the ball was rolling.

When I came to view the flat, I wanted it and it had a garden for my dogs. I decided not to view any other properties. The manager at Cadlington House and Golden Lane Housing sorted everything out for me. On the day I moved in, I had lots of boxes, and my manager and friends helped me. We had pizza and chips and some had fish and chips that night.

One of the best things is having a front door and what that represents. Everything in the flat is mine, and I decide who comes in and when. I’ve learnt how to do things for myself.

I’ve always felt safe here. Even though I’ve had a few problems, Golden Lane Housing has always been there to help me out, they’re always at the other end of the phone if I need them too.

Having your independence is important, and that’s what I’ve got, I’m very happy. It’s somewhere to call my own and it’s lovely. My friends come over, I like to cook them food. I’ve got good neighbours. One of my new hobbies is chickens; I’ve got two Polly and Sally. My neighbour keeps them in her garden, I feed them and let them out of their coops and into the chicken run when my neighbour’s working.

I’ve always loved dogs, when I first moved in I had two, and after they died I got Toffy. He’s lovely. I take him training, it’s not far from my flat, and he’s well behaved but can be cheeky!”
