Kimberley Oldham, customer services repairs advisor joined the Golden Lane Housing team in September 2013 after approaching Mencap Employment Team.
“I have always wanted to work in an office from being at school but I lacked in confidence. There were barriers at school and unfortunately the education system didn’t provide the help they do today.
After my son was old enough to go to school I decided I needed to get the right training and support to find a job in an office. With help from my partner I learned about Mencap Employment who helped me. They arranged for a placement in an office which gave an insight and foundation of an administration role. It was a fantastic experience and during this time I began to gain confidence and increase my knowledge and skills.
My son has been a huge influence, he has a learning disability and I’m always encouraging him to achieve the best he can – but I can’t expect him to do it if I can’t.
As the temporary placement was coming to an end I had gained the qualifications needed. Mencap Employment arranged for me to carry out the role as a part-time customer services repairs advisor with Golden Lane Housing.
I was excited and nervous the first time I visited the office, everyone made me feel so welcome. I’m part of a great team, doing a variety of work on the computer and phones whilst learning more skills. My days go so quickly, I love working here!
It’s a fantastic organisation with lovely staff doing exceptional work for people with a learning disability and I’m proud to be part of it doing my dream job,” says Kimberley Oldham.
Michael Frimston, Mencap employment coordinator who supported Kimberley to find work added, “Kimberley has always been extremely positive. The initial placement was designed to test her skills and abilities in a real work environment before making the step into paid employment. Her confidence has continued to grow since working at Golden Lane Housing, and she has achieved so much.”
