The National Housing Federation’s Housing Week brought together housing associations to show how they are leading through the change. Each day focused on a different topic.
The week kicked off with #HousingDay, a 24-hour social media event to celebrate the impact of social housing. Four tenants worked with members across the Golden Lane Housing (GLH) teams at the Centre of Engagement in the North. Together we supported Gas Safety Week as tenants designed an easy read leaflet that was sent to people’s homes. They also gave ideas towards other information.
Throughout the week we shared stories about people enjoying life, doing the things they want to do here and now. Tenants explained why friendships are important. Rob talked about turning healthy eating into a lifestyle. Alaine and her friends chose their shiny new accessible kitchen.
Our first #GLHRepairs tenant day showed GLH tenants Alex and Paul joining our operatives to gain work experience and a greater understanding of general repairs.
Minister Nick Gibb and Maria Miller MP visited tenants at their homes in the South East along with GLH and Mencap staff. Tenants explained why supported housing was important to them.
Alex, GLH tenant explained to Minister Nick Gibb, “People can make real decisions about their own future to live independently – support with everyday living, social skills, budgeting, healthy eating, fun, using public transport and attending appointments.”
Mencap provided easy read training to our staff to support our work further.
We ended the week with important messaging about why the Government’s proposal for the future funding model of supported housing risks a housing crisis for people with a learning disability. Read our response.
