Wanting to create a garden they could relax and enjoy, it was entered into the selection process for GLH’s annual tenant garden makeover.
The back garden was plain with a grass area and patio. At the front, the driveway is quite narrow which gave them little room to get out of the car unless they stepped on to the grass which wasn’t ideal, especially in bad weather.
Together with Golden Lane Housing, Maria and Rachael designed their garden and selected pink as the colour theme for the plants. The cost of the work was higher than the budget allocated.
With thanks to the generous donations from Forrest Recruitment, J.Tomlinson, Jewson and Dog and Bone pub the majority of the materials, tools and plants were provided and three contractors to support on the day, which meant all the work could be carried out.
Maria and Rachael said, “We helped to design our garden with Golden Lane Housing. We’d like to thank everyone for the money they have donated. Now we can relax and really enjoy spending time in a garden we’ve always wanted. We can’t thank you enough, you’ve made us very happy.”
On the day, twelve members of the Golden Lane Housing team were joined by Maria, Rachael, staff and three people from J.Tomlinson. Work began by marking out the path, seating area and border before digging began. Fence panels were painted and our In-house Repairs team started building the furniture and planters.
Maria and Rachael selected the combination of plants and flowers before helping to pot them. Throughout the day, they worked with different members of the team to help create the garden they wanted.
The path was edged and laid, stones put in the seating area before the painted furniture was added, and plants, herbs and strawberries were planted. The final touches were made to back garden by fixing the lighting, garden ornaments and trellis, while pots and accessories were placed. The day ended with the several stones being sunk into the front lawn, giving Rachael and Maria another pathway to their house. Everyone worked tirelessly to finish the garden makeover in just one day.
J.Tomlinson’s project coordinator, Lee Osbourne said, “J.Tomlinson were proud to be of assistance with the provision of materials and labour to assist Golden Lane Housing. We are committed to a partnership between ourselves and Golden Lane Housing and our assistance is another element that can strengthen this moving forward. We’re glad the tenants enjoyed the day as we did and are pleased with the result that the whole team was able to achieve. We look forward to next year’s project!”
