Last weekend Lizzie, James, Sarah and Claire invited family, friends and staff to join in the celebrations of moving into their own home in North Yorkshire, one of the first properties to benefit from the bond capital.
Guests gathered on this joyous occasion in the colourfully decorated garden, which was shared with a relative’s and a neighbour’s birthday where gifts were given by James and Sarah.
Fun and laughter continued throughout the afternoon as people chatted, danced to their favourite music whilst others played musical instruments and enjoyed listening to Dominic sing, a member of the support team.
Debbie, Lizzie’s Mum says, “It’s fantastic, everyone has settled in so well, you can see it here today. I know Lizzie is very happy living here with her friends, when I visit she tells me when it’s time for me to go home, she’ll wave as I’m going, she’s truly content.
Everything is just perfect for them; the house, staff, location and they have full lives. We couldn’t ask for any more. Today is a real celebration that they’re sharing with everyone.
When they moved in they had their own belongings around them, since then they’ve been buying other items together for their home and garden.
It’s a success that has taken planning, preparation and working together as a team. The families have continually worked together, Golden Lane Housing bought the right home that was adapted it to meet their needs and after interviewing for a support provider we chose Mencap who are a great support team.
I’m a real advocate for Golden Lane Housing and Mencap, I’ve been telling everyone about it! Michael and I are active members of the local Mencap Committee in Northallerton, we have been discussing sharing the knowledge and experiences gained so other people with a learning disability and their families can benefit. We’re currently helping Golden Lane Housing to produce their family guide too.”
