GLH tenant Lizzy and Ian fell in love after meeting at their local Gateway Club in Barnsley.
“I love Ian to bits and he loves me, we’d be lost without each other,” says Lizzy. “We’re very close. Having someone to care about and who cares for you in the same way is special. We’re very happy and I’ve never loved anyone the way I love Ian.
We both live in different houses in Barnsley and Mencap supports us. It doesn’t matter that we don’t live in the same home as we spend a lot of time together. It’s important to be part of the things he does and show my support, well, we do the same for each other.
Ian’s one of the goal keepers for Barnsley’s mixed ability football team. They practice every few weeks, and I go down to watch him train, I’ve never missed one yet – he’s very good you know! I’ve also got to know new people, the players and other people who come to watch, everyone’s really nice.
Everyone was very excited when Mencap arranged the first mixed ability football tournament at Keepmoat Stadium. Lots of teams took part from different areas. I went down to watch, it was a great day.
Two teams entered from Barnsley, Ian’s team called themselves the Mencap Flatcaps. They played really well but sadly got knocked out at the quarter finals. There were a few stalls at the event too and drumming. I had a go on the drums; I’ve played before and really liked it.
I’m looking forward to watching the Barnsley teams play against other areas again, and would love to go to next year’s tournament and hopefully lift the trophy next time.”
