We’re celebrating providing 104 homes for 225 people with a learning disability across the country during 2015/16, which is our most successful years on record.
Front door keys were given to 48 people moving into specially adapted houses and bungalows bought using 2014 bond monies and 167 tenants moved into privately rented homes. We became the landlord for ten people by managing and maintaining properties owned by other providers.
Amanda became our first tenant in Northern Ireland towards the end of 2015, which was soon followed by GLH leasing a property for six more people, and a property to be purchased using 2014 bond capital is currently in conveyancing.
Jenna (pictured above) and her three friends are some of the tenants to move into their home supported by Mencap. John and Jenny Hollow, Jenna’s parents explain, “With Jenna’s inability with speech her need for advocacy has used technology to aid communication and source her choices to move into her new home which was eventually bought using 2014 Retail Charity Bond money. Jenna actually signed her tenancy agreement on her birthday so it was a double celebration! She beamed with joy at achieving a long-term goal after years of unfulfilled promises.”
John Verge, head of development says, “We’re extremely proud. The team has worked hard to provide high quality homes for 225 people with a learning disability that meet their needs and aspirations. We’re gaining a far greater reach by working in Northern Ireland, and we are continuing to progress plans with Mencap Northern Ireland. It’s been an incredible year, but we couldn’t have done this without our partnership work with people with a learning disability, families and other people that are important to them, Mencap and 30 other support providers.”
