Transforming a garden in Somerset

Golden Lane Housing joined forces with Mencap, tenants, families and TESN Projects Ltd to complete a garden make over in Somerset.

Jack, Steven, Ed and Danny’s home was chosen by Golden Lane Housing team. Within the last few years Jack has had two strokes which have limited his mobility which has meant he was struggling to get to the grass area in the back garden as it was uneven.

Involving the tenants, families and staff we discussed ways to improve the access, create areas they can relax, grow vegetables and easily maintain.

Before the event a second level of decking and stone areas were built in the back with steps leading to the grass area.

The day began with digging out a large stump, quickly followed by placing the fish from the pond in a large tub so work could begin on removing the overgrown reeds. Trees and hedges were cut back in the front and back gardens, a raised bed was built for the vegetables, areas were dug out before laying two new rockery areas, pathways were cleared of shrubs and weeds while mulching was laid to create low maintenance areas.

New plants gave colour and therapeutic scents to the garden with new potted plants across the two levels of decking and stone areas. We planted 15 plants and ten pots were filled with lavender and flowers and plants and herbs. Twenty solar panelled lights were put around the garden and a new wind chime with a coloured ball to add colour in the evening time.

Adam, Jack’s Father is very happy with all the support and hard work that both Mencap and GLH have done to make it a success. Adam says, “I have peace of mind now that should Jack ever have another stroke then he would always have somewhere to recuperate that met his needs. I’m really pleased with everything everyone has done for Jack and the others.”

John Verge, head of development explains, “We wanted to transform the garden so Jack, Steven, Ed and Danny would benefit. Many people have come together to make these improvements. I would like to say a special thank you to the families including Adam, Jack’s Father’s for helping on the day, TESN Projects Ltd for donating time and materials and to all the staff for volunteering.”
