Starting your first job is a nerve wracking experience, but it’s an important milestone towards becoming an independent adult.

Mencap want everyone with a learning disability who wants to work and be independent to be given the opportunity by employers.

Matti F Stevens, supporter at Golden Lane Housing explains his story:

“When I was in primary school I learnt about IT and really enjoyed it.

During secondary school there were practical courses that helped me to prepare for the future which I have since built on the skills I learnt there. I went to college studying a BTEC National in IT System Support. After college I went on to looking for a job with Job Seekers, where they pointed me towards a Person Progression Qualification run jointly by Mencap and another local college which taught me about all the things to do with getting a job, like writing a CV and going to an interview.

During the course we were found companies to do work experience with, which is when I first came to Golden Lane Housing.

I’m a supporter and part of the Customer Services Team at the Manchester office. As a supporter I do all kinds of things in my role including creating maps for the teams, ordering stationery for the office and various administration tasks. I even get to help the teams in the office with IT problems and requests.

Working here has given me more confidence in general, my colleagues definitely helped with this. I’m more sociable now and willing to try new things. Having a paid job has also given me more independence and freedom.

At the very first staff day I attended, I got to meet everyone. Some people work across the country so it gave me the opportunity to get to know the team. It was a brilliant day, and everyone was so friendly.

Its great working here and we do good work to help people with a learning disability. I’ve worked here for four years now and the time has flown by!”
