From Hospital to Home

A long stay hospital is a place that some people with learning disabilities live in. Most of the long stay hospitals in England are closed. Some closed many years ago but there are a small number that are still open.

Valuing People said that people with a learning disability should no longer live in long stay hospitals and a target date was set for these to close.

Golden Lane Housing was successful in a bid to work with Nottinghamshire County Council to find new homes for seven individuals who were living in a long stay hospital in Worksop, Nottinghamshire.

GLH worked closely with the individuals and their families, the Care Management team, Occupational Therapist and the staff team from the hospital to purchase and fully adapt five bungalows. It was a long process but we are pleased to announce that our seven new tenants all moved into their new homes at the end of March 2010 and are already enjoying their new found independence.

This is a huge step for these individuals, many of whom have been living in the hospital unit for many years. Every property has been made wheelchair accessible so that friendships can be maintained in their new homes if the tenants wish to keep in contact.

Every tenant will be supported in their new home by Care Providers Perthyn or Choice Support with additional tenancy support being provided from our Housing Support Officers at Golden Lane Housing.
