GLH Issues Paper; The future of Supported Living
LHA Cuts and Changes
In our first issues paper for 2011 GLH discusses recent changes to housing benefit and the Local Housing Allowance. These changes, combined with a national shortage of affordable housing, means that supported living housing could be under significant pressure, GLH proposes a new approach to housing provision.
M's Story
Golden Lane Housing was approached by Staffordshire Social Services to re house a 19 year old client who was living in emergency housing. She had previously been housed in an adult placement scheme which wasn’t meeting her needs and she was then transferred to short stay respite. In as little as 7 weeks the client is now living in a rented flat within the heart of Telford.
The tenant known as M wanted to live by herself and close to the local college and other amenities. Working closely with Staffordshire Social Services, a support provider was identified whilst the hunt was on for a 2 bed flat for M and her sleep in support.
Finding a nice flat to rent within the Local Housing Allowance rate wasn’t easy as there was an influx of student doctors to the area. After viewing a handful of flats which were less than desirable, we found a flat which M liked.
M moved in soon after Golden Lane Housing had secured the flat and she has since said how happy she is living there. She is currently working with social services and her support provider to put together a person centred plan for her future …
Golden Lane Housing has made this opportunity a reality by leasing the flat from an estate agent and sub letting the flat to our new tenant M. As well as having her own tenancy agreement she has housing related support from her housing support officer at Golden Lane Housing and personal care and support from her support provider.
