Nigel Litten, planned maintenance programme manager at Golden Lane Housing (GLH) has a real passion to work with people with a learning disability. Read about his most memorable experience.
“I have had the pleasure of working at GLH for just over ten years, having previously worked in a variety of building maintenance roles within social housing and local authority. I can honestly say I have never experienced job satisfaction like I have at GLH.
One of my most memorable experiences at GLH will give you an insight to the enjoyment and passion I have for working with people with a learning disability.
We adapted a property for two gents who use wheelchairs. While we were handing over the property to them, one of them burst into tears. I thought he was unhappy with the property, then realised they were not tears of sorrow but tears of joy. The gent was so happy, and for the first time in his life he was going to have his own bedroom. He was in his late 50s and had spent his life in intuitions sleeping in dormitories with others – having your own bedroom is a simple pleasure that most people take for granted. I continue to feel privileged to work with our tenants and maintain their homes.
It is not always the big life changing events of people moving into a new home that brings about job satisfaction. By adapting properties and thinking of unique ways makes it a place people can call home and live as independently as possible. From fitting a low level work surface in kitchen for a person with a wheelchair so they can prepare food through to a level access shower room to give people dignity whilst bathing.
I have been lucky enough to carry out a number of different roles at GLH, initially as a surveyor before going into development and management. Each role has given me an opportunity to affect our tenants’ lives. Working closely with fellow colleagues makes sure our tenant’s needs are considered in all of the work we do. I love the fact we involve people in making choices, it gives them confidence to make decisions – whether it’s for their internal decorations, finishes, and tile and flooring or kitchen layout – and who best to do this, but GLH.
The pleasure I get from seeing our tenants benefit from works that I have been involved in and grow in confidence to live independent lives, well, there’s nothing quite like it.
I know I have the best job.”
