Golden Lane Housing’s Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in under 12 hours

13/08/2014

Yorkshire3Peaks_main
On 12 September 2014 Golden Lane Housing (GLH) and others take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in under 12 hours to raise money for Mencap.

People with a learning disability are among the most excluded in today’s society. Mencap’s vision is a world where they are valued equally, listened to and included.

Starting at 6am in Horton-in-Ribblesdale the group will begin their climb up Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, a total of 5000 feet.

Melissa O’Donnell, central operations manager and Andy Locke, housing officer, the organisers of this challenge explain, “We wanted to raise money for Mencap as we know how much people with a learning disability benefit from the great work they do. Deciding to make it a personal challenge we chose to climb the Yorkshire Three Peaks in under 12 hours, something we’ve never done before. Seven of us are in training so all we need now is good weather!”

Yaa Kwateng, special projects recently joined GLH on a six month secondment from GlaxoSmithKline Services Unlimited and shares her poem:

I joined GLH with glee, love, heartiness
My expected deliverables clearly laid out for me
Largely to be relied upon, my Mencap
A challenge for me, a developmental opportunity
But what if I could add on a physical challenge?
Something reminiscent of my homeland’s environs – The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge!
To help raise funds to support the noble work of Mencap
So whilst I subject my body to a rigorous training regime
An opportunity to petition your benevolence
To support my 24.5 mile walk, in less than 12 hours over such a demanding terrain
My first ever physical challenge for a charitable cause
The survival mine, the gratitude yours, the glory of course will be Mencap’s!
