This quarter, Philip Whittaker, property surveyor (acting) and Carol Conaghan, customer services advisor have won the SPOT (Special Presentation of Thanks) Award.

This award is given to members of staff that have been recognised for going beyond their role to make a difference to the lives of people with a learning disability, their support networks and staff they work with.

The Leadership team has recognised Philip’s contributions by accepting additional responsibilities as acting property surveyor coupled with his customer service and understanding of tenants’ needs. Recently, Phil redesigned a kitchen to enable the washing facilities to be relocated, giving the individual greater independence.

“’I am extremely flattered to be nominated for the SPOT award, I am grateful to GLH for providing me with the opportunity to step up to the role of property surveyor which is helping me to develop and allows me to provide our tenants with choices regarding improvement works in their homes.

On this particular kitchen renewal we worked very closely with parents, support staff and tenants over an eighteen month period to design the kitchen to their preferences. It is extremely rewarding seeing the independence this has given to our tenants and how pleased all parties were with the finished product,” explains Phil.

During 2014, Carol successfully led the Manchester One Mencap Fundraising team with a combination of events that includes members of the Golden Lane Housing team and Mencap staff based at the Manchester office. She has organised the majority of the events that were enhanced through personal contributions to ensure its success, so far raising over £6,000 for Mencap.

“What a year it’s been! We’ve had many events to raise money for Mencap, some people achieving their personal challenges while others have contributed in other ways. A huge thank you to everyone for their generous donations, we’ve raised over £6,000 in aid of Mencap to help them continue their fabulous work for people with a learning disability.

“I’m really honoured to receive this award. It’s been a lot of hard work organising it all but a real pleasure to lead the Manchester One Mencap Fundraising team. I must say it has very much been a team effort and would like to thank everyone who has helped to make each event a great success. We’ve still got a couple of events before the end of the year…watch out for the photos on GLH’s Twitter!” says Carol.
