About GLH

People with a learning disability often find it difficult to access mainstream housing

There is a national shortage of :

  • Social Housing
  • Local Authority Housing
  • Housing Associations
  • Social Rented Housing
  • Private Rented Housing

All too often this leads to people not being able to move out of their family home or being given limited choices, such as only being offered registered care (care homes). This is why Golden Lane Housing provides an alternative.

Of the 1.5 million people with a learning disability in the UK, over 29,000 live with carers aged over 70. Parents and carers make huge sacrifices to provide for their loved ones, but as they grow older it’s not always possible for them to continue providing a supportive home, leaving thousands of people facing an uncertain future.

There is also evidence to suggest that the number of people with severe learning disabilities may increase by around 1% per annum for the next 15 years.

It was to address the challenges that people with a learning disability face that Mencap established GLH in 1998. GLH believes that supported living housing can provide an important option for people with a learning disability, giving them choice about where they live, who they live with and how they live within their homes. Since 1998 GLH has directly housed over 1,000 people and given advice, guidance and support to hundreds more every year.
