Last year Katie, Elizabeth and Tessa decided to change support provider to Mencap. Through going to Mencap’s forum their friendship with Ruth and Kate has grown.
“We’ve lived in the same area as Ruth and her housemate Kate for many years,” says Katie, Elizabeth and Tessa. “Although we’ve seen each other out and about, we’d only really had the odd chat.
We got talking to Ruth and Katie at a Mencap forum in Hexham. It’s a place where people who are supported by Mencap discuss things that are important to them and get to know others.
At one of the meetings, they invited us to play dominos at Hexham Community Church. We got on really well, and there’s been no looking back – we’ve got such a busy social calendar now.
We regularly have tea at each other’s houses and sometimes sleep over. One night we were at Ruth and Kate’s playing boules, and we were laughing so much the neighbours asked if they could join in! That night ended with our favourite takeaway. There’s a lovely café where we go for lunch too.
Recently we celebrated Ruth’s birthday at the Down Syndrome North East Ball. We all got our posh frocks on, it was a great night and took so many photos.
There are a couple of trips planned. We’re going to the Light Water Valley and Beamish outdoor museum. Ruth’s also comes swimming with us and goes to the knitting club with Tessa.
It’s important to have friends in your life that you can trust and can talk through things, and someone you can turn to in good and bad times. We’re really happy that we’ve become good friends.”
